Bandish-bandits-Naseeruddin-Shah-Ritwik Bhowmik,-Shreya Chaudhary

Bandish Bandits opens up in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, portraying Naseeruddin Shah as Pandit Radheymohan Rathod, a legendary master of traditional classical singing who is a custodian of Rathod Gharana. Along with his other students, he also trains his grandson Radhe (Ritwik Bhowmik), who he also looks at as his successor.

Tamanna (Shreya Chaudhary), who lives a life of a hippie in Mumbai, wants to overcome the pop music industry by her talent. She also has a dream to collaborate with Queen Eli, a fictional world-class pop music sensation, to prove her self-worth to her estranged mom Avantika Roy (Meghna Malik). Harshwardhan (Riruraj Singh) is a very modern and broadminded dad who has been pampering Tamanna since her childhood and supports her in making her dream come true. Rajesh Tailang acts as Radhe’s dad, Rajendra, who had taken a loan amounting to Rs 1.5 crore to open a music school in Jodhpur and is now struggling to repay the loan as a builder ran off with the money. Mohini (Sheeba Chaddha) acts as Radhe’s mother.

The story is a musical romantic drama that mostly revolves around Radhe, who is stuck between fulfilling his duties as a son and as a student who wants to be a successor tp Panditji. He gives up his dreams and accepts the situation as it is, just for the sake of his family. Even when he was put up at a job in the royal palace as an accountant by his father or his marriage was finalized without his consent, he accepted it fatefully. Panditji is a respected man in the family and outside world. His every word is taken as an order from the Devine himself by his family.

Radhe attends a concert organized by his buddy Kabir (Rahul Kumar) with Tamanna as star singer and performer. Kabir insists that Radhe meets Tamanna once. Tamanna, being a pop artist with lots of fan-following on social media, makes fun of classical music in front of Radhe, referring to it as “strangulating a goat”. Notwithstanding the insult, Radhe performs a little bit. She gets impressed by the performance and wants him to collaborate on a song with her. Arghya (Kunaal Roy Kapoor), a foul-mouthed man, acts as Tamanna’s manager and friend who always has her back.

Panditji was a disciplined man and wanted his grandson to be one. Radhe was late for the sacred thread tying ceremony (Ganda-Bandhan) by his grandfather. Hence, the ceremony was called off. Radhe was upset and wanted prayashchit (atonement) upon advice from his uncle Devendra (Amit Mistry). It was during his atonement period that he comes to know of his father’s loan from the bank. Radhe collaborates with Tamanna for a song after his atonement period gets over. While working on the song, they both get struck by the love bug. Radhe also starts loving fusion music. Their first song together turns out to be a super hit.

Digvijay (Atul Kulkarni), a celebrated and successful classical performer, comes to Jodhpur and challenges Panditji to a competition. But due to the inevitable old age-related issue of hearing loss, he appoints his 21 years old grandson, Radhe, to compete against Digvijay in the Sangeet Samrat competition. Sangeet Samrat has its own legacy and purity because of its pure and untainted music. Mohini, then, plays an important role in training Radhe for the competition as Panditji isn’t well. The Sangeet Samrat competition is organized between Digvijay and Radhe. Digvijay’s performance is very exceptional but Radhe’s is no less. A cut-throat competition takes place between the two.

Indian traditional classical music has been passed as a legacy from one generation to another for centuries. Yet, most of today’s generation is not at all aware of the values of Indian classical music. Director Anand Tiwari, along with the writers, has done a great job of keeping the traditional values alive in this series. Several mysteries and secrets unfold in the later episodes. Naseeruddin Shah has performed outstandingly as a guru who, even without using words, expresses his feelings and actions very precisely. He shows a glimpse of a perfect sensei or guru

Overall it’s a fun and entertainment-packed performance that forms the base of the series. Twists and turns in the story are a bonus and make you curious to stick to it till the end. Actors Ritwik and Shreya’s on and off chemistry makes it a must-watch.
