Humility – Being Humble or self-centered.

Let me tell you a story that my grandma told me when I was a kid and has stayed with me since then. So it goes like this,…. Once upon a time, there was an arrogant and proud king. One day he had a visitor in his kingdom, it was a saint. He told him that power and processions are materialistic aspirations.

We should not be proud of these temporary pleasures. Rather we all should be humble towards everyone. The more we practice this the more god’s grace will flow in our lives and protect from any harm. But the arrogant King insulted the saint.

After a few days, the king went for hunting. In his chase to hunt down the Deer, he went far away in the deep forest where he met with an accident. Both the horse and he fell on the ground unconscious.

In that unconscious state, none of his ministers or courtiers were present to help him. As fate would have, the robbers took his wealth and clothes. Upon regaining consciousness, he remembered the saint’s words and immediately he became conscious.

He realized his mistake. He should have listened to his ministers and courtiers’ advice of not to follow his hunt in the deep jungle. From then on he decided to be humble and practice humility towards all.

Humility is one of the hardest traits to develop. To be humble, the first aspect one has to recognize is that we are not always right. And the second that one cannot have all the answers.

It has become less of virtue in today’s time. For some people, it is a hindrance to growth and for others, it is the very essence of being human. As for me, it is the most important and desired characteristic that one should have. So why it is important and what we can do to have humility.

And before we delve into why and how to practice Humility. Let’s first try to understand what is Humility?

A lot of diverse and contrasting definitions on humility are available. Here I’m going to run through few definitions as per dictionary

One definition says, it is, “ the quality of having a modest or low view of one’s importance.”

Another definition says,” a disposition to be humble; a lack of false pride”.

Anyone reading the first definition would think twice before imbibing this trait. Opposite to the 1st definition is the 2nd one which I would like to emphasize. And the reason to understand the true meaning and let god’s grace flow in our lives.

Humility is nothing but putting others first before self. As said by CS Lewis: “True humility is not thinking less of yourself; it is thinking of yourself less”.

Human to humility is no different. But, the gap created with time is humongous. Having said that it is not difficult to understand and practice.

When life is born on this earth. The mother takes care of that life with utmost care without any ego or pride or any credit. It all starts with humility. But as we grow in life we tend to lose the essence of it. We become a product of “I, Me, myself”.

The practice of Humility will make us a learned soul. We will realize that every act is a clear distinction between self and others. It all starts with I….” I want”, “I like”, “I know”, I’m right”.

A simple example I would like to quote here is of plastic products. We introduced plastic in our lives for various reasons. And it was the right thing to do. But as we progressed the world realized the dent it has created around us.

The complete cycle of creation to destruction is an act of self-importance. This led to global warming and pollution. But, a little humility towards our mother earth, we could have averted this situation.

We all have heard many times that we are a part of the Kalyug period. And  many religious texts have defined this period as the period of diminishing human values of tolerance, mercy, kindness, selflessness, and compassion

So, I insist that everyone have humility in today’s day and age. Life is too short to be anything but happy.

True happiness is what I would like to call as the “We” factor

We extend a hand of help to others,

We saying some good words.

We accept that nothing in this world is perfect.

We do a good deed without showcasing,

We try to understand a situation rather than assuming,

We accept feedback,

We foresee before creating and at last competing after yourself.

Last but not least, we need to recognize the improvement area in our life and work towards it.

Thus, practising humility will help to build trust and encourage learning. It is a key aspect of personal and professional growth. At last, it is very easy to be humble, we need to practice:

1. Confident

We all have ups and downs in our life. Confidence is one such a trait that helps us fight back. It recognises our strength to be better and bigger in life. It is imperative to reflect on your achievement and cherish your accomplishment. Also, help and guide others to experience the sweetness of accomplished life. So Be Confident, Be humble.

2. Know your strength and weakness

We need to understand that as nothing in this world is perfect and we are part of this imperfect world. So accept it and make our weakness our strength. Make use of our strength to help others to become stronger and better humans.

3. Don’t hesitate

Ask questions, as assumptions are the biggest enemy of mankind. It is important to be righteous in your decision, flawless in your acts. Please show humility towards mother earth and its inhabitants.

4. The unknown

Do not hesitate to go out of your comfort zone to experience challenges. Discover the unknown. This experience will give us the understanding to know our true worth. As we discover our innate abilities in us we also need to guide people around us to follow the righteous path.

Remember who you are

Don’t forget that we are human first. God gave us a “Brain” to think the right. “Eyes” to see the goodness around. “Mouth” to make everyone around us happy. “Hands” to do good deeds. “Legs” to follow the right path.

I hope through this article I can encourage you all to be humble in your actions. Today, the world needs such people who can show humility. It has the power to avert any destruction to Mother Earth.

Moreover what you can achieve with a smile, is not possible through hatred. And do not forget that the journey from Human to humility is difficult but not unattainable.

Happy Reading!
